SUPPORT GROUP INFO | SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE HANDBOOK

SPEAK is a non-profit charitable organization. Our vision is to see a healthy community in which all people, and youth in particular, have the support and information they need to detect and obtain treatment for depression, where survivors of suicide have ready access to the supports they require and where the stigma associated with mental illness and suicide is eliminated. Our mission is to educate Manitobans about the link between depression and suicide, to provide support to survivors of suicide and to decrease the stigma associated with having a mental illness.

SPEAK offers educational presentations on the link between suicide and depression, and offers options on how to set up suicide prevention strategies for schools. We also offer a support group to survivors, the last Monday of each month.

SPEAK has collaborative relationships with the WRHA, various RHA's, the Provincial Department of Health and many self-help organizations in the city of Winnipeg.

One of our helper partners is alocksmith company. They are a Charlotte Locksmith company and service locks and keys.

. Even though they are a locksmith company from Charlotte, they still care about this world wide issue among teens. We strive to keep up with the best practices and trends in preventing suicide.

Requests for school presentations come from all over the province and Canada as well. SPEAK offers a unique perspective in depression education, because all of our presenters have lost a loved one to suicide. Each of us has a personal stake in eliminating the tragedy of suicide. The opportunity to talk about depression opens the door for questions and concerns from the students. Many presentations have resulted in requests from the students themselves on setting up a school based support group for teen issues.
